Using AI in Social Media? Here’s Where to Draw the Line

Last month, we addressed the elephant in the room: the growing use of AI in social media marketing.

AI is no longer a future trend we can casually observe from the sidelines. It’s embedded in most of the platforms we use and increasingly integrated into the workflows that power our campaigns.

We had already explored how AI can act as a collaborator rather than a replacement, helping teams brainstorm ideas and free up time for more strategic work. But as more organizations experiment with AI tools, another question starts to surface:

Where shouldn’t we use AI?

While AI can make social media teams faster and more efficient, not every part of marketing benefits from automation. Marketing still needs personality behind it. When AI starts carrying too much of that weight, audiences can feel it. And in a social landscape where trust is already hard to earn, that’s a risk most organizations can’t afford.

Here are a few areas where AI shouldn’t be the first resort.

Defining Your Brand Voice

Your brand voice is one of the most important assets your organization has on social media.

It reflects how you communicate your values, how audiences recognize your presence online, and how trust builds over time.

AI tools are designed to generate language that works across many contexts. While that can produce polished content quickly, it can also flatten the personality that makes a brand distinctive. AI models also tend to produce a recognizable tone of their own. Tools like ChatGPT or Claude often have a distinct noticeable sound that’s clear and structured, but also somewhat neutral and uniform.

When organizations rely too heavily on AI to shape their voice and tone, the result can feel generic, content that reads smoothly but lacks the nuance that makes it memorable.

Your brand voice should come from the people behind the brand. After all, the goal of social media is to humanize your organization and build real connections with your audience. If your organization hasn’t yet defined its voice or tone, AI isn’t the place to start. Developing a voice requires understanding your audience, your values, and how your team naturally communicates.

When you have an established voice, AI can play the supporting role it’s meant to be, helping organize ideas or refine drafts. But the output should always be edited and shaped by your team to ensure your brand is being personified accurately..

Researching What Works on Social

AI tools scan massive amounts of online content and summarize trends in seconds, which can be helpful when you’re looking for a quick overview of the digital landscape.

But truly understanding social media requires a more hands-on approach. Many of the best content ideas come from spending time within the platforms themselves. Observing how audiences interact with posts, studying competitors’ content, and noticing the small creative details that make certain posts stand out.

There are limitations to relying on AI for social media research. Most LLM’s are designed to process and output text, not fully interpret the visual and interactive nature of social platforms. And many of these tools can’t directly access or scrape platforms like YouTube, X, or Instagram. With this lack of reliable information, an AI tool may confidently generate answers that are made up due to the lack of access to the correct information.

AI can still be helpful once you’ve gathered examples or links yourself by summarizing patterns or organizing observations you point out to it. But discovering what’s actually happening on social media still requires marketers to explore the platforms firsthand. 

Responding to Comments and Conversations

One of the biggest opportunities social media offers organizations is the ability to interact directly with their audiences. This can look like responding to questions in your comments or direct messages, engaging with partners’ posts, or congratulating a collaborator on a milestone. Automating these interactions can undermine the very connection social media is meant to create.

AI-generated responses may sound technically correct, but they lack the empathy and nuance that real conversations require. They also tend to default to very formal or declarative language, which can make replies feel impersonal in a space that’s meant for transparent conversational. When someone takes the time to leave a comment or ask a question, a generic reply can make the interaction feel transactional rather than genuine.

The bigger challenge is context. Representing your brand on social media means having a deep understanding of your partners/clients, your audience, and the tone that feels natural in a given moment. AI simply responds to the input it receives. If you use AI to try to get a quick response to a comment without supplying that deeper context, responses can easily fall flat.

AI can still play a small supporting role, particularly within social listening or monitoring tools like Sprout or Mention that have direct access to data from the platform you’re looking at. Because these tools pull directly from social feeds, the AI is analyzing real conversations rather than trying to generate responses without context. That makes it more useful for tasks like surfacing comments worth responding to, identifying recurring questions, or spotting trends in audience sentiment.

But the response itself should come from a real person. Those small moments of interaction are often where trust is built.

Thought Leadership

Thought leadership works because it reflects real expertise. Audiences follow organizations for insights they can’t get anywhere else, lessons from experience, observations about industry trends, and perspectives shaped by real work in the field.

AI tools generate content by identifying patterns in existing information. In other words, they are inherently derivative. No matter how advanced the model or how large the dataset, AI can only recombine what already exists.

While that can produce well-structured writing, it rarely results in truly original ideas.

When organizations rely on AI to produce thought leadership content, the result may feel informative but predictable—similar to countless other articles pulling from the same sources your audience can easily find on their own.

The same principle applies to longer pieces of content like blog posts, reports, and guides that represent your organization’s expertise. AI can help structure ideas or refine language, but the substance should come from real experience, original insights, and thoughtful analysis. And whatever role AI plays in the writing process, its output should always be carefully edited and refined before it’s shared publicly.

Without that human perspective, thought leadership quickly becomes content for content’s sake.

One Question to Ask Before Using AI

AI can absolutely make your team more efficient as it’s a powerful tool for brainstorming ideas, organizing research, and speeding up early drafts. But, before relying on AI for any piece of content, it’s worth asking a simple question:

Am I summarizing information, or creating something new?

AI is generally strong at summarizing and organizing existing information you give it like pulling together research or identifying patterns. But when a task requires creativity, subjective judgment, empathy, or cultural awareness, that’s where human perspective becomes essential.

LLM’s work by identifying patterns in existing data. They don’t have lived experience or contextual understanding beyond what they’ve been trained on and what you provide in a prompt. That means they can support the process, but they shouldn’t be responsible for the final perspective or message.

The organizations that will stand out in an AI-driven landscape won’t be the ones that automate everything, but the ones that understand where automation helps and where human insight still matters more.
