In the Trenches with Jade Martin: Building a Career Rooted in Care

Author’s Note: In the Trenches is our series that introduces you to the people behind The Good Lemon. Each piece offers a closer look at how our team members think, what drives their work, and how their experiences shape the way we partner with clients.

When you talk to The Good Lemon’s Digital Content Specialist, Jade Martin, it doesn’t take long to notice her appreciation for the little things — the shades of color that shift a mood, the small details that make a story feel human, the small effort that makes someone else’s day easier.

I’ve always been drawn to small things that make a big difference. Sometimes it’s the tiniest details like the tone of a caption or the color of a graphic that can change how someone feels when they see it.
— Jade Martin

That instinct for connection has shaped her journey at The Good Lemon, where she blends creative storytelling, design sensibility, and a genuine curiosity about people into every piece of content she touches.

Psychology Meets Digital Storytelling

Jade started at TGL as a college student, balancing freelance work with her studies in psychology, a background that continues to influence how she approaches her work.

That empathy extends beyond content strategy. She’s intentional about how each piece of content will land with its audience, whether that means adjusting tone to make complex topics more approachable or using design to evoke the right emotional response.

I’m really interested in how people think and operate, and that carries into everything I do here. Whether it’s writing a blog, a post, or a newsletter, I try to think about it from the audience’s perspective, what would make them feel understood or supported?
— Jade Martin

That same thoughtfulness shapes how Jade shows up in her day-to-day work too, influencing how she communicates, collaborates, and creates space for others to feel comfortable. Whether she’s drafting copy for a client campaign or reviewing a teammate’s design, she looks for ways to make people feel heard and valued.

Jade uses humor and warmth to build connections with coworkers and clients alike.

I think humor helps people relax, as long as the work’s getting done, why can’t we laugh?

Learning Through Collaboration

When asked what she’s learned from her time at TGL, Jade doesn’t hesitate to credit her mentors.

I’ve really learned a lot from my team. Time management and communication, all the little professional habits that make a huge difference. I’ve learned it’s okay to be honest about where you’re at with your work, which helps me get things done on time and in a good headspace.
— Jade Martin

That lesson, she says, has changed the way she delivers for clients.

When I’m doing well mentally, it shows up in the work. Everything comes out cleaner and more thoughtful.

Building with Care

Jade describes herself as someone who writes everything down the second it comes to mind.

Case in point: her personal 70-page Google Doc labeled “TGL Notes”.

At the very top of my personal working doc, I have one line that says: ‘Audience first approach.’ It’s my reminder that everything we create should make people feel seen.
— Jade Martin

That philosophy shows up in her favorite projects, especially this “In the Trenches” blog series.

Working on this series has been one of my proudest moments. Even though I don’t always work closely with every team member, hearing everyone’s stories reminds me that we’re all human. We all have our moments, and we’re all working toward something that matters.

Growth Isn’t Linear

Reflecting on her path in digital marketing, Jade emphasizes one belief she hopes more people embrace: growth takes time.

You don’t need to come into this field with years of experience. You can start small, stay consistent, and grow from there. And growth is never linear, especially in digital marketing, where everything changes constantly. You have to be willing to change with it.
— Jade Martin

Why It Matters

For Jade, the most inspiring organizations are often the smallest ones, community groups working hard to make a big impact.

I love seeing small teams do work that lifts the weight off one person’s shoulders, that kind of impact really matters to me.
— Jade Martin

One group that speaks to her is Identity House in New York City, an all-volunteer community providing peer counseling and support for LGBTQ+ adults. The center offers a space where people can talk about issues related to sexuality, gender identity, relationships, and mental health.

Seeing the difference something I worked on can make, feeling it, hearing about it, that’s what’s rewarding. When the way I see the world aligns with a cause I’m helping to amplify, it feels good. It feels like I’m part of something bigger.
