Google: Updating our inactive account policies
If your organization has a Google account that no one has accessed in years or has the credentials for, it’s worth finally figuring that out. Many organizations use personal Google accounts to manage things, so make sure you don’t lose whatever may be there!
“Starting later this year, if a [personal] Google Account has not been used or signed into for at least 2 years, we may delete the account and its contents – including content within Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar) and Google Photos.”
Marketing Trends
Content Marketing Institute: Is Marketing Climate Change Coming? Or Is It Already Here?
Leaving the phrase “marketing climate change” aside, here’s Gartner’s 2023 CMO Spend and Strategy Survey of 410 CMOs and business leaders.
“Chief marketing officers increased their investment in social advertising, digital video advertising, and influencers. Most survey respondents also decreased their investment in search-based advertising…”
“The rise of push content (a la TikTok) also means relevant, targeted, and personalized content now finds the user rather than the user finding the content (a la search). “
Content Marketing Institute: Marketing Content to Gen Z? You Better Play by Their Rules
In case you forget, Gen Z consists of anyone born in 1997 or later. The oldest Gen Zers are in their twenties!
“Gen Z never lived without social media’s existence. Seeing a prevalence of fake news and false claims online trained them to look for conflicts between what brands say and what they do.”
“‘If marketers are signaling a virtuous purpose that doesn’t ring true, young people can pick up on that,’ Deanna says. ‘It shows a lack of empathy. We all know when someone is talking at us versus when someone is talking with us, and those nuances are so important.’”

The New York Times: Surgeon General Warns That Social Media May Harm Children and Adolescents
Speaking of those Gen Zers…
In a 19-page advisory, the United States surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, noted that the effects of social media on adolescent mental health were not fully understood, and that social media can be beneficial to some users. Nonetheless, he wrote, ‘There are ample indicators that social media can also have a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents.’”
Social Media Today: Twitter Adds List Search Capacity on Desktop
As this piece points out, Twitter Lists are a vastly under-utilized tool for marketers and communicators (and something we use all the time!). Twitter is boosting Lists a bit by making it easier to find new lists to follow and engage with more content.
“Here’s a small, but potentially helpful Twitter update. Starting today, when you go to the ‘Lists’ tab in the web version of the app, you can now search for interesting lists based on your focus keywords.”
Fast Company: Meta’s Twitter alternative could be a big boost for the company
Everyone’s been asking about Twitter alternatives, but here’s one that could actually be interesting.
“Word of Meta’s as-yet-unnamed feature (codenamed P92 or Barcelona) comes as the number of daily active users on Facebook begins to climb once more and user time spent on Instagram was up 24% in the company’s most recent quarter. Instagram is reportedly leading the charge on this Twitter alternative. Users will be able to sign in with their Instagram username and will see their handle, bio, followers, and verification status populated into the app.”
