The Need: 

Public Citizen is a non-profit committed to ensuring that all citizens are represented in the halls of power in Washington, DC. For more than four decades, they have proudly championed citizen interests before Congress to challenge corporate power and hold the government accountable.

 Public Citizen needed comprehensive social media management to help engage and continue to grow their large audiences across Facebook and Twitter, as well as ongoing strategic consulting as they added new staff and programs. In addition, Public Citizen needed assistance organizing content and campaigns from multiple teams within the organization, with competing priorities and deadlines.

The Solution:

The Good Lemon directly managed Public Citizen’s Facebook and Twitter accounts for seven months using a shared editorial calendar and frequent interactions with staff across several programs. 

Since Public Citizen’s success is due to effectively engaging their audience to take action via petitions, advocacy alerts, online donations, and events on issues across a wide spectrum, the editorial calendar was used to organize input from many different team members and to anticipate events. We directed weekly meetings to assess new and changing social media needs and modify the calendar to reflect last-minute events and breaking news, training the staff to also use this calendar to organize themselves and to communicate across teams.

Based on resulting metrics, we refined Public Citizen’s messaging and calls to action to increase engagement from their target audiences. We also assisted with high-level online events, such as Twitter chats with celebrities like Shailene Woodley, and large, in-person events with well-known partners like MoveOn.org and Consumers Union.

    The Results 

        Public Citizen’s Facebook and Twitter audiences grew steadily from March-October 2016.

        Their Facebook audience increased by over 3,000 fans, crossing the 50,000 mark, and post engagement positively increased over time.

        Their Twitter audience increased by over 3,000 new Twitter Followers and daily impressions grew, on average, to 30,000 impressions per day.
